Video Transcript:

So here’s another daily tip from your friendly local dermatologist.

Basal cell cancers: now we’ve discussed this in other videos, but they are the most common cancer out there. In fact, there’s more basal cell cancers than all the other cancers combined. So this is a big topic. Now how you get a basal cell cancer is normally from years and years of chronic sun exposure, and having a complexion that doesn’t tan easily. So if you’re somebody who is very pale, and you get out the sun for just five minutes and you’re burnt, then you have a higher risk of getting a basal cell cancer than if you tan easily and don’t get burned often. Limiting your exposure to the sun or to tanning beds is the number one thing you can do to avoid basal cell cancers.

Now when you get a basal cell cancer, there are different options for treatment. So just on the surface of the skin, we can usually just do a modality that treats the surface of the skin. But if they have depth to them, then we usually need to use a modality that addresses the depth, like radiation, or surgery, or Mohs surgery, something like that. So, please talk to your local dermatologist about not only your diagnosis, but also the recommended treatment options. And then you can go to wonderful resources like the American Academy of Dermatology, and they have a lot of great stuff. They have apps that you can use to see if Mohs appropriate, and they have lots of great articles as well.

I’d encourage you to watch the longer video we did on basal cell cancers, and if you have any questions, please talk to your local dermatologist.
