A Quick Overview on Squamous Cell Cancers

From the Colorado Dermatology Institute in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Daily Do of Dermatology - Title

Video Transcript:

So here’s another daily tip from your friendly local dermatologist.

Okay, squamous cell cancers are the second most common type of cancers out. There’s a ton of them, and they’re a little bit more dangerous than basal cell cancers, because they can spread internally a little bit easier. So we have to take these seriously. So, please look at the pathology report from your local dermatologist, and please ask them why they recommended the treatment that they did.

Now if a squamous cell cancer is just on the surface of the skin, then we can probably treat that with a treatment that just addresses the surface of skin, kind of makes sense. But the moment that the squamous cell cancer has depth to it, then we really need to address that squamous cell cancer with the treatment modality that addresses the depth, kind of makes sense. And the treatments that address depth are usually surgery or Mohs surgery or radiation. Those are kind of the top three.

So please have a conversation with your local dermatologist about what the best treatment is for you. Now the American Academy of Dermatology has some great resources and apps that you can use to see what’s most appropriate for you, and we also have a longer video so that you can try to get more information on squamous cell cancers. But as always, please talk to your local dermatologist about what you can do to treat you.

Now squamous cell cancers, just like all the skin cancers are primarily caused by sun exposure or from tanning beds. So please limit their use as much as you can.
