Here’s another daily tip from your friendly local dermatologist.

All right, so are facials at a spa good? And the answer is maybe. Let’s see how your skin does, and let’s have some reasonable rules to follow when you’re at the spa.

So number one: Please make sure the spa looks clean. Please make sure that they’re sterilizing their instruments if they’re using any, and please only get non-invasive procedures done. So if they’re doing a facial, fine. If they’re doing a microdermabrasion, fine. If they’re trying to inject you with chemicals, that’s where I think it crosses the line. Because I don’t believe that the average spa has the training or the supervision really required to inject something into your face.

Another basic rule of thumb is if blood happens from your treatment, it’s probably too much for a spa to handle. Next, if your face is all red and blotchy and just doesn’t look good for a week or two afterwards? Then either they did something that was in my opinion too invasive for a spa to do, or they did something that wasn’t invasive incorrectly.

So your face should look good. It should glow. You should look and feel good after a spa treatment. And if you don’t, they might not have done something correctly. They might have overstepped their training or bounds, or perhaps the products they used weren’t right for your skin. If you have someone that you’ve gone to for years, and you’re comfortable with them, and they do good work, stick with it!

But I would put limits on things. Just like you wouldn’t go to your local mechanic to have brain surgery done, you probably wouldn’t want to go to a spa without a licensed physician there to have invasive procedures done. All right. Hope this helps.
