Video Transcript:

So here’s another daily tip from your friendly local dermatologist in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

So a lot of us have moles that stick up out of our skin, that we just don’t like the appearance of, or perhaps they’re getting irritated by clothes or maybe a razor running over them. So how do you take care of those? And the first lesson is, is that the only thing that’s allowed to happen to a mole, is that it’s removed in one form or another, and then it’s looked at under the microscope to make sure nothing is dangerous or concerning with that mole. Because there’s always a chance that there could be something going on with that mole, that could impact your health later on. So you don’t throw them all out. You look at it under the microscope. That’s lesson number one.

Removing a mole

Lesson number two is that you don’t do anything but remove it. I do not like lasering a mole. I do not like freezing a mole. I don’t like doing anything except for removing it with some sort of blade.

Number three, there’s a couple different ways that you can remove them all but all of them will produce a scar. So please don’t think you can just have a mole here shaved off, and it’s gonna be perfectly normal, and nobody’s ever gonna know you had anything done. There will be a scar. Sometimes those scars are not very noticeable, but sometimes they are. So please be careful with them.

Number four, what I usually recommend with removing a mole that sticks up, is a simple shave procedure where we shave the top portion of the mole off, and then we look at under the microscope. And the reason I recommend this, is that if you don’t like the cosmetic appearance of the shave, well then you can always have it cut out and stitched up. And we have videos on not only what a shave removal is, or a biopsy if you will, but also what an excision is, so you can watch those.

If you go immediately to having a mole cut out that you do not like, then we’re kind of stuck. That’s the end of the road. But if you do a shave first, and you don’t like the cosmetic appearance, we can always go to an excision later.

The important part of all of this, is please talk to your local dermatologist about what is right for you, so you understand the risks, the benefits, and the options.
