So here’s another daily tip from your friendly local dermatologist.

Are there foods that are known to cause acne? And the answer is absolutely. Guys, it is ridiculous. I don’t care what anybody says, it is ridiculous, to think that food is going to impact absolutely every area of your life, except for your skin. I mean that’s absurd. The skin is the biggest organ of your body, and if you’re gonna be doing things that are damaging your heart and your lungs and your brain, it will in one shape or form translate into your skin.

You Are What You Eat!

Now we all know this. You are what you eat. We’ve all heard that a thousand times, and we all know that we should be eating more fruits and vegetables. We know that we shouldn’t be drinking sugar drinks. We shouldn’t be getting the frappuccinos from Starbucks. We shouldn’t be consuming soda pop. We also probably shouldn’t be doing crack. All right, we have the common-sense knowledge and people just kind of think, “Oh, it’s my diet. It’s not gonna affect my acne or my skin, or any other condition of my skin.” And for years, the dermatology community has said, “No, nothing is associated with your skin.” And that is complete hogwash. I’d do stronger language, but you know, my parents might be listening.

Foods That Can Contribute to Acne

So guys, please, eat a good diet. Eat a plant-based diet. Do not consume a ton of sugar. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Now with that said, the biggest things that I see, that cause problems with acne are kind of threefold. Number one: dairy. Dairy has a ton of hormones in it. Hormones that are supposed to be consumed while we are developing when we’re very young. First year or two of life. We’re getting a ton of hormones. And we know that hormones are one of the biggest contributors to acne, as well as all sorts of other problems. The other thing is nuts. You know, if I were to have some peanut butter, I would break out within a week, a big nasty zit on my face. My brother’s the same way. There are some nuts that people just don’t tolerate, and seems to contribute to your acne. Fried foods, we all know we shouldn’t be consuming any fried foods, and that inflammatory burden that it puts on our body is gonna show in your skin. Excesses of caffeine, excesses of certain vitamins, excesses of anything, we all know is not the best. In all things moderation.

Steps You Can Take

So this is what I would suggest. Get educated on what you’re eating. Limit the processed foods. Have lots of non-inflammatory foods in your diet like fruits and veggies. Get rid of the dairy. You don’t need it. And keep a food journal. Guys, this is the simplest thing to do and nobody does it, it blows my mind! Get a piece of paper and a pen. Write down everything that enters your mouth, and do it for two to three weeks. On the other side of the paper notice when your acne flares. You’re gonna learn a lot about how diet is affecting your life, and it’s free! Just takes a little bit of time.
