Recently a wise woman dropped some great knowledge on me that I use on a daily basis now. The knowledge that was passed down to me was some tips on how to communicate to a loved one, children, friends, and family which helps spark a good conversation with three simple questions.

  • Tell me something good that happened to you today.
  • Tell me something bad that happened to you today.
  • Tell me something that you did that was kind for someone else today.

We have used this recently with our adolescent children at home and it has really helped the communication and get a gauge on how their day went. It has helped the kids do some self-reflection about their day and I really like the last question because we want our kids to be kind to others and do random acts of kindness. It also gives us a glance at what is important to our kids, what they see is important, and a lot about what type of character they have by understanding what is of value to them.

Try this approach with those who are important in your life and see where the conversation takes you. We did this at dinner the other night and we sat there and talked for a long time and these questions helped spark up other topics, and it was nice to actually sit down at dinner with no phones, and converse, which is a dying art in our ever-growing technological world we live in.

Make it a smashing weekend!
