Four Tips For Younger Looking Skin

Sun, weather, and lifestyle choices have a dramatic effect on how young or old our skin appears.  Colorado’s generally beautiful climate is great to be out in but it does present challenges for our skin.  Here are some tips to keep your skin looking youthful.

1.       Protect from the damaging effects of the sun.  Sun is essential for life but it is very hard on unprotected skin.  But if you keep your skin protected while in the sun (even on a cloudy day or while skiing) with a good quality sun screen with at least SPF 30 and which contains Zinc or Titanium Dioxide (or both), you can enjoy the sun and help your skin stay looking younger longer.  We sell several varieties of good qualify sunscreens in the clinic.

2.       Dryness.  Colorado’s dry climate makes for better outdoor living but it isn’t kind to your skin.  Keep your skin moisturized with a good quality moisturizer and your skin will be happier.  There is no need to buy expensive moisturizers and you should stay away from anything with artificial fragrance.  There are several good quality and inexpensive moisturizers on the market.  We carry several of them in the clinic and would be happy to discuss which one might be best for your skin type and activities.

3.       Lifestyle choices.  Smoking, tanning beds, excessive alcohol consumption and recreational drugs are very hard on your skin.  If you want to maintain healthy and youthful looking skin, maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep away from tanning beds – they are not only terrible for your skin, they can also promote skin cancer.

What Is Botox?

Botox FAQ

What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in people 18 to 65 years of age for a short period of time (temporary).

BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered by a healthcare professional as a simple, nonsurgical treatment that is injected directly into the muscles between the brows. It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes moderate to severe lines to form between the brows. Individual results may vary.

How does BOTOX® Cosmetic work?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of the “11s,” the moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes moderate to severe lines to form between the brows.

When will I see results from a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment?

Within days, you may see a marked improvement in the moderate-to-severe frown lines between your brows. Lines continue to improve for up to 30 days, and results can last for up to 4 months. Individual results may vary.

How long does BOTOX® Cosmetic last?

Visible results have been shown to last up to 4 months.1 Your own results may vary – be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about what you can expect and when to schedule your next appointment.

Who should administer BOTOX® Cosmetic?

To make the selection process easier, you may want to consider choosing a physician from the BOTOX® Cosmetic Find a Doctor tool.

Just enter your ZIP code to locate a BOTOX® Cosmetic doctor in your area. Or, to find out if a specific doctor is part of our network, you can type in his or her name.

Is treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic painful?

Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Prior to injection, your physician may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Most patients are in and out of the physician’s office without downtime following BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment.

Side effects associated with the injection include localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, swelling, redness, and/or bleeding/bruising.

Will I still be able to make facial expressions?

Although the results are visible, a treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you’ve “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is temporarily reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.

8 Ways to Protect Yourself From Skin Cancer

Of all the cancers that humans can get, skin cancer is the most common, which is why the American Academy of Dermatology recommends an annual full body skin exam to be performed on all adults. This is especially important for patients with a personal history of extensive sun exposure, and those with lighter colored skin. Prevention and early diagnosis are important factors in maintaining overall skin health.  People of all races and colors can get skin cancer. Those with light skin who sunburn easily have a higher risk. Using indoor tanning devices such as tanning beds and sunlamps also increases the risk of developing skin cancer. Following these 8 steps may help prevent skin cancer:
  1. Generously apply a broad-spectrum water-resistant sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or more to all exposed skin when outdoors.
  2. Wear protective clothing, such as a long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses where possible.
  3. Seek shade. The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 am and 4pm.
  4. Protect children from sun exposure by playing in the shade, wearing protective clothing, and applying sunscreen.
  5. Use extra caution near water, snow, and sand as they reflect the damaging rays of the sun which can increase your chance of sunburn.
  6. Get vitamin D safely through a healthy diet that may include vitamin supplements.
  7. Avoid tanning beds. Ultraviolet light from the sun and tanning beds can cause skin cancer and wrinkling.
  8. Do a yearly self skin-exam. If you notice anything changing, growing, or bleeding on your skin, contact a dermatologist.

Epionce Skin Care

Epionce is the latest line of high quality skin care products we are offering to help you become comfortable in your skin.  Epionce is a botanical based skin care system formulated by a Board Certified Dermatologist to help patients with troubled skin. This Dermatologist had been seeing recurring episodes of stubborn skin conditions such as Rosacea, Eczema, and Psoriasis  with many patients. In an attempt to manage these skin conditions as gently as possible, the Dermatologist developed a skin care line (Epionce) using non-irritating botanical ingredients that were actually beneficial for the skin.

How does it work?

Epionce stops the cycle that damages the skin. The botanical ingredients block the formation of inflammatory factors, and they strengthen and repair the skin’s barrier by adjusting the lipid ratio which triggers the skin’s ability to heal faster. The skin care line is not only great for the patient who has Eczema, Psoriasis, or Rosacea, it also is excellent as part of an anti-aging regimen. One product in the Epionce line that is in high demand is Lytic. Lytic can produce many of the same results as a retinoid product, but it is more gentle to the skin which makes it a good choice for the person whose skin may be too sensitive or too thin to use a retinoid product. The end result is tighter pores, faster cell turnover, and when paired up with their renewal line, fewer and softer lines and wrinkles.

Seasonal Skin Care: Year-Round Skin Tips

Should you change your skin care regimen from season to season? The general answer is yes because of differences such as sun exposure, temperature, and humidity between seasons in most places. In Colorado, the generally beautiful weather promotes outside activity, and the abundant sunshine we enjoy here means that our skin needs to be protected from sun damage year-round. In winter, the combination of lower humidity and the frequency of bright sunny days in Colorado present special challenges to your skin. During the winter months you should use a good quality moisturizer and when engaging in outdoor activity, always use a sun block which contains Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide (or both) with an SPF rating of at least 30. We offer both of these in the clinic. In summer, the need for frequent application of sun block increases. It is especially important to use a facial moisturizer that contains a high SPF during the day to protect your face from harmful rays, even if you only spend a few minutes at a time outdoors. Adding antioxidants to your daily skin care regimen will also add to your skin’s healthy glow and help protect it from the elements and environmental pollution. If you are on an anti-aging regimen using glycolic or retinoic products, you should consider reducing their use because of the sun-sensitizing affects they have on the skin. Wearing clothing with built-in sun block features is also an excellent way to protect your skin, especially if you are outdoors for extended periods of time. Regardless of the season, your skin is remarkably adaptive and resilient, and with proper care you can maintain a healthy, radiant look throughout the changing year.

Dermasweep Vs. Dermabrasion

The Dermasweep multi-level skin resurfacing system is the next generation of facial microdermabrasion procedures. Where a standard microdermabrasion procedure exfoliates dead and dry skin, the Dermsasweep is a two step system which includes exfoliation followed by infusion of solutions custom blended for your individual skin type and condition. The first step is similar to most “one step” microdermabrasion systems in that a vacuum brush pulls off dead, dry, old skin. The second step which is the infusion of custom blended solutions exclusive to Dermasweep, is what takes the Dermasweep to a new level of facial care. Using the variety of infusion solutions provided by Dermasweep, our Aesthetician will blend a specific solution for each patient’s dermatologic needs. For example, for acne there is a salicylic acid solution, for dry skin there is a hyaluronic acid solution, and there are many other custom blend infusion options to address and provide maximum support for each person’s skin type and issues. Once the custom blended infusion solution has been prepared, the exclusive Dermasweep applicator gently drives the solution deep into the skin for maximum absorption and benefit. The end result is clean, soft, glowing skin that looks and feels great and begs to be touched.

The price for a tube of Lip Balm is $12.50. Contact us if you’re interested!

Choose the Right Skin Cleanser

What kind of cleanser should you be using for you skin? This is a question we hear frequently in our clinic. It really does depend on your skin type. Here are some quick guidelines in choosing the right cleanser for your skin type: For oily skin: use a cleanser that contains Salicylic Acid. This is a plant-derived ingredient that helps to keep the pores clean and free of blackheads and speeds up exfoliation, allowing better absorption of other products needed to clear up acne. For normal skin: you have a much wider range of products to choose from. You may want to try a cleanser containing Glycolic Acid, which speeds up the natural exfoliation process just like Salicylic Acid, but without overdrying your skin. For dry skin: usually a cream-based cleanser with Glycerin or another type of moisturizer works quite well. At Colorado Dermatology Institute, we have a good variety of cleansers that would be just right for you, ranging from $20-$30. Let us know if you’d like to see the brands and types we carry.

Microdermabrasion with DermaSweep

The DermaSweep MD is an exfoliation system that is safe and painless. The machine uses a wand that has different tips and a suction that “sweep” away dead dry cells. What makes this machine so different? It can infuse vitamins and acids back into your skin, unlike traditional machines that leave your skin feeling dry and parched. This procedure treats a wide variety of skin conditions and types, including fine lines and wrinkles, large pores, acne, hyperpigmentation and much more. It is the top most layer of the skin that is removed, leaving skin feeling smoother and looking brighter, more youthful. The increased circulation encourages collagen formation, thus firming and toning the epidermis. This treatment takes one hour, and when you leave your skin may have a pinkish glow to it that may last for a couple hours. The price for this at Colorado Dermatology Institute is $99.

gloMinerals Anti-Oxidant Makeup

Wouldn’t you prefer using a makeup that is actually good for your skin instead of clogging your pores with substances that can be irritating? Colorado Dermatology Institute offers gloMinerals Makeup which is triple-milled, resulting in a very fine layer of makeup that doesn’t appear “cakey.” gloMinerals also uses pharmaceutical-grade ingredients as well as anti-oxidant products such as Green Tea Extract, and Vitamins A, C, and E. So gloMinerals makeup looks good while maintaining and protecting the health of the skin. gloMinerals makeup also contains titanium dioxide, which is a broad-spectrum UV protector, especially important in Colorado with its abundant sunshine. This makeup is suitable for all skin types, especially for those with sensitive skin, because it is fragrance free, oil free, and there are no fillers, or synthetic dyes.
