Popping a Pimple

Daily Do of Dermatology - Title

Video Transcript:

So here’s another “Daily Do” from your friendly local dermatologist.

So in dermatology, we have a couple of rules: one, scratch it like mad and the other one is pop everything. And I’m completely lying. You don’t want to scratch it like mad and you don’t want to pop everything, or anything really. So think about it. Take your, take your thumb out here, and squeeze right there on the skin, and as you’re squeezing right before that moment where the stuff pops out and sprays your mirror, ask yourself where the force of that squeeze is going. And if you think about it, it’s not only going up, but it’s also going down. So until that moment of relief, of where the pus comes out, you’re driving it deeper into your skin, and when you drive things deeper into your skin, you’re driving it into the dermis. And maybe if you squeeze hard enough, into the subcutaneous fat. And we know that when you drive things deeper into the skin, or when injury happens deeper in the skin, that’s where scarring happens, and that’s when permanent lifelong scars can develop.

Don’t Pop ‘Em!

So please, please, please, do not pop your pimples. So if you absolutely have to do something at home, then do warm compresses until the pimple naturally relieves itself. A warm compress is taking a washcloth to put it on with hot water, put it on the area that’s affected, when it cools down, put it back down into the hot water, and put it back on the area. Do this for about 15 minutes, three times a day. And you’ll notice that things just kind of open up and start to drain naturally. Now, don’t make the water so hot that you burn your skin, because you lose style points if you burn your skin.
