Should You Exfoliate?

Video Transcript:

So here’s another daily tip from your friendly local dermatologist.

All right, when I go into a beauty store and I look at the latest and greatest products, there’s exfoliating stuff all over the place. And in dermatology, we have an expression and it’s, “Scratch it like mad, keep scratching it!”

That’s a lie. All right, we want you to be gentle with your skin. We do not want you to rub and scrape and scratch. And all these exfoliating products that are there, they’re basically rubbing and scraping and scratching your skin. We want you to be gentle with your skin. For the vast majority of patients, all of these exfoliators that you get, whether that’s in a cream, whether that’s in a cleanser, whether that’s in a special type of washcloth, most of them do more harm than good.

Don’t exfoliate your skin. If you have a special and specific genetic condition that’s been diagnosed by your dermatologists, they might give you something to exfoliate your skin. Otherwise, not needed, save your money, save your skin, and go with the gentle products.

Dr. Reagan Anderson is a local dermatologist from Colorado Springs.
