Sun Intensity With Altitude

From the Colorado Dermatology Institute in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Daily Do of Dermatology - Title

Video Transcript:

So here’s another “Daily Do” from your friendly local dermatologist.

So some people have asked, “Well, is the sun really stronger in Colorado than it is in Los Angeles?” And the answer is absolutely! The higher up in altitude that you get, the stronger the sun becomes. And so Colorado, you know we’re probably somewhere around 20 to maybe 35 percent stronger sun, or stronger UV radiation than what you have at sea-level. Also the air is more dry here. We tend not to have as many clouds.

Now all these factors weigh in to how much sun exposure you’re getting, how much DNA damage you’re getting from the sun, and how much older you’re unnecessarily looking from the sun here than you have in California. Now even though you say that I don’t want people in California to say, “Ah the sun is 20 to 30% less strong here than in Colorado. Let’s throw on the baby oil and let’s fry!” I don’t want that. Okay, please practice safe sun.

So the rules are the same no matter where you are. If you’re outside, if there’s sun overhead, you need sunscreen. You need sun protective clothing. And please, look at yourself once a month in the mirror. Let us know how we can help when something is new, changing, or growing on you.
