Here’s another daily tip from your friendly local dermatologist!

So the other day I had a lady come in and she was kind of just this golden brown because she’d spent every day in the Sun laying out in the Sun all day long and I was taking a cancer off of her back and I kind of said hey look, you know just because you have sunscreen on doesn’t mean you can lay in the Sun. Sunscreens are to be used in activities when you’re getting incidental Sun while you’re being active or doing something. They’re not so that you can lay in the Sun for 10 hours a day, because guys this is why you have increased risk of skin cancers with sunscreen use. That’s right, you have increased risk of skin cancers with sunscreen use when you’re using them inappropriately. So if you’re using a sunscreen so that you can bake in the Sun for hours a day you’re actually, even though you’re somewhat protected, you’re getting more and more and more and more damage and you can tell that because you’re getting tan, being tan shows that you’re getting damaged and so years ago when sunscreens first came out people were laying in the Sun all day long thinking ah, I am not gonna have any consequences but they kept building the damage and damage and that’s why you get more skin cancers with sunscreens. Now you get less skin cancers with sunscreens if you use them appropriately. Right, so if you’re gonna go for a hike and you cover up with sun protective clothing and hats and you put sunscreens on the exposed parts and you try not to go out in the midday Sun and you do everything else appropriately, absolutely, they will decrease your risk for premature aging and problems that come with the Sun specifically skin cancers, but they are not not not to be used so you can spend longer baking in the Sun with the little mirror underneath to get skin cancer underneath here, too. That’s just not how you use them.

Because Dermatologists treat more than just skin cancer!
