The Power of Belief OR Who Do You Listen To?

From the Colorado Dermatology Institute in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Create Your Day - House in the Background

Let’s talk about beliefs. Not in Unicorns or Fairy Dust but the beliefs that govern our lives in big ways and small. Now let’s think about the influences we allow to infiltrate our subconscious and conscious minds that help to shape our beliefs in ourselves, those around us, the world in general, and our place in that world. We often talk about “beliefs” in intangible ways but beliefs are very tangible and have very real impact on our lives. Tony Robbins put it succinctly when he said: “Beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy. Human beings have the awesome ability to take any experience of their lives and create a meaning that disempowers them or one that can literally save their lives.”

If beliefs are so powerful, doesn’t make sense to be careful which and whose beliefs we allow to influence us? In his series of lectures on Self Development and Motivation, Jim Rohn stated that “… every day, stand guard at the door of your mind, and you alone decide what thoughts and beliefs you let into your life. For they will shape whether you feel … cursed or blessed.”

So with this as background, who and what are you listening to? People spend hours on Social Media telling the world their most intimate thoughts and secrets and hungrily waiting for “Social Media” (as if it were a person who cared about them) to comment. People place such stock in this that they can get depressed or even commit suicide because “Social Media” was mean to them. People snap up even the most outlandish opinions of celebrities as if they had any more wisdom than we do to expound on anything outside their manufactured make believe celebrity world. People seem to be tuned into those whose stock response to most things is gloom and doom or why something you’d like to do will never work. Is it any wonder that self-limiting beliefs can take root and fester in our minds and psyches in such an insidious fashion that we don’t even realize it as we slowly come to adopt negative beliefs that only serve to make us unhappy and hold us back?

But, as always, there is also good news. Once we recognize the power of belief and then decide that WE will shape our own beliefs and perceptions rather than responding to someone else’s beliefs, then we will have taken back our power to live our own lives, to NOT be anyone’s puppet. And then we will be free.
