Thought for the Day #25

From the Colorado Dermatology Institute in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Recently I have been helping a friend who I have known since I was 10 years old through some difficult times.  I have been having almost daily conversations with him about his situation and how to navigate his path during these trying times.  Just the other day he was at a low point and looking at all the potential things that could go wrong.  I listened to everything he had to say and when he was done I told him to tell me five things that he is grateful for.  He was a bit taken back and he had to pause for a few seconds and there was that awkward silence on the phone.  After several seconds I started filling in the blanks for him, you have 4 amazing kids who you love and adore, you have an amazing wife who is your rock, you have a great job that is supporting and understanding your situation…   I told him, “This situation you are dealing with is not unique, you may think it is but it is not.  Is it fair, no.  Is it just, no.  But listen there are people in this world that have it way worse than you.  Find the good in life and build on that.”

I told him to take five minutes to himself and think about all the things you do have and all the things you are grateful for, and quit feeding your mind with all this negativity and quit catastrophizing the situation.  Later that evening he sent a text that was light hearted and thanked me for giving him the swift kick he needed.

Today, find the good in life and all the things we are grateful for, and no one has ever injured their eyesight by looking on the bright side.
