“Rise Above”

This weekend we went to the Pikes Peak Regional Air Show. It was awesome! In addition  to the airplanes and the flying, one exhibit and airplane in particular was particularly inspiring. That exhibit was for the Tuskegee Airman and the plane was the P-51C Mustang with that famous Red Tail. The Tuskegee Airman were the first African Americans trained to be fighter pilots in World War II. To accomplish that, they had to dig deep to overcome what many thought were overwhelming personal and cultural obstacles and prove that they could fly and fight. And they did with such spectacular success that they were instrumental in bringing on full integration into the combat arms of the US Armed Forces. The story of the Tuskegee Airmen is carried forward to today by the Commemorative Air Force’s Red Tail Squadron. Based on the struggle and the accomplishments of the Tuskegee Airmen, the motto of the Red Tail Squadron is  “Rise Above” and their six guiding principles are:
“Aim High; Believe In Yourself; Use Your Brain; Never Quit; Be Ready to Go; Expect To Win.”
That motto and those six principles define not only what the Tuskegee Airmen were about, they are simple and clear statements of what it takes to overcome and succeed no matter what obstacles you face. Life can be challenging, people can be challenging, but if you follow those six guiding principles, you too can “Rise Above” and show them all what you can do!
