Over the break I did a lot a reflecting and thought about what happened in 2018. I went through my pictures in my phone and A LOT happened in 2018 personally and professionally, and 2018 was a banner year! I am very grateful for everything that happened and I am excited about what 2019 is going to bring! I spoke to several loved ones over the break and several focused on what went wrong in 2018 and they were happy to close the book on the prior year and start a new year with a fresh outlook.
These types of conversations made me think of a quote I read from a great book I got from my secret Santa, Eric the Master of Language, and the quote states, “I have also learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions, and not our circumstances.” – Martha Washington
The loved ones I spoke with who were glad 2018 was over were focusing on the things that went wrong and not what went right. They were focusing on the their circumstances and the negativity and not focusing on all the great things they have right in front of them. When they were reminded of all the great things we have, their disposition or state almost immediately changed.
All of these things we are learning about our state, physiology, focus, and language are not new things… even our very first lady spoke about how our state impacts our happiness or misery. What do you chose to focus on? And why do you chose to focus on it?
Have a great day and weekend!
