Through our unique affiliation with the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Department of Dermatology, we can offer our patients expanded treatment options which continues our commitment to provide the most comprehensive and up to date dermatologic care possible for our patients.
As part of our commitment at Colorado Dermatology Institute to helping you become comfortable in your skin®, we offer treatment with an Intense Pulse Light (IPL) device that is used to lessen the appearance of “sun spots” which give your skin an uneven tone. The IPL is also effective for those small broken blood vessels that can be so annoying. An IPL is a non-laser medical device which delivers a series of gentle pulses of visible light onto the surface of your skin. Our specially trained medical esthetician focuses the light from the IPL on the area needing attention, which agitates and damages the pigmentation which is what you see as “sun spots”. Once the pigment is agitated, the body sends in its natural repair mechanism to absorb the damaged cells. The pigmented spots that have been treated will get darker and begin to move to the surface of the skin and then they exfoliate off, which leaves your skin with a more even tone. The procedure is non-invasive and fairly painless – it feels like a rubber band snap. It takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour per treatment, depending on the area needing treatment. At Colorado Dermatology Institute, the areas we cover are hands, chest and face. When you leave the clinic, you will be slightly pink and this should last about 3 hours. For best results, patients need about 3-5 treatments at 4 week intervals. The patient should call and schedule a free consultation with our medical esthetician to find out if they are a good candidate for this type of procedure, and also to get an assessment of how many treatments would be needed for maximum benefit.
