How do Skin Cancer Treatments Work?
Colorado Dermatology Institute provides a range of treatment options available for skin cancer. This encompasses simple, minimally invasive procedures such as electrodessication and curettage, where the cancer cells are “scraped and burned” off, to more complex surgeries like Mohs surgery, which involves the gradual removal of cancerous skin layers while preserving as much healthy skin as possible.
Skin Cancer Treatments
Biopsy Procedure
This is a minimally invasive procedure to diagnose skin cancer. It involves the removal of a small sample of suspicious skin tissue for further examination under a microscope. This allows our doctors to accurately determine the type and stage of cancer, which is crucial in determining the most effective treatment plan.
Excisional Surgery
We understand that each individual is unique, and so are their aesthetic goals. Our experts take the time to listen to your concerns and tailor personalized treatment plans that cater to your specific needs, ensuring optimal results.
Mohs Surgery
The most advanced surgical technique for treating skin cancer, Mohs surgery involves the gradual removal of thin layers of cancerous skin tissue while examining it under a microscope. This process usually continues until all cancer cells have been removed while preserving as much healthy skin tissue as possible. This method is highly effective for treating skin cancers in high-risk areas such as the face or scalp.
Photodynamic Light Therapy (PDT)
This treatment involves the use of a combination of photosensitizing medication and specific light wavelengths to target and kill pre-cancerous cells. PDT is mostly utilized for precancers as is not usually strong enough once something has developed into a full-blown cancer. It is a non-invasive and relatively painless option but may require multiple treatment sessions.
Superficial Radiation Therapy
Superficial Radiation Therapy, or SRT, is a specialized type of radiation therapy that targets only the top layers of skin, making it an ideal option for certain types of basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. This treatment is painless and has a high success rate, with minimal scarring.
Delayed Closure Excision
This surgical procedure involves removing the skin cancer and leaving the wound open to heal on its own, then closing it at a later time. This technique is usually used for melanomas on areas like the face where there may not be enough healthy skin tissue available for immediate closure.
Electrodesiccation and Curettage (ED&C)
In this procedure, the cancerous skin tissue is scraped away with a sharp instrument and then burned with an electric current to destroy any remaining cancer cells. ED&C is typically used for small, superficial skin cancers but does leave a scar that can look like a cigarette or cigar burn so we try to not do these too often as the scar is often unfavorable to patients.

It's important to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to treating skin cancer. Each treatment option has its own benefits and risks, and the best approach will depend on factors such as the type of skin cancer, its location and size, as well as the individual's overall health. It is crucial to work closely with our board-certified dermatologist to determine the most effective treatment plan for each individual case.
In addition to medical treatments, lifestyle changes such as wearing sunscreen daily and regularly visiting a dermatologist for skin checks can greatly reduce the risk of developing skin cancer. With early detection and proper treatment, skin cancer can be effectively treated, and patients can continue to lead healthy lives.
