Sleep and Your Skin

Video Transcript:

Here’s another daily tip from your friendly local dermatologist in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Okay, so how does sleep impact or interact with your skin? And there’s lots of different things that lack of sleep will do to you from your head to your toes, and we all know this. We get a great night’s sleep when we wake up in the morning, and we’re refreshed, and we’re ready to go, and our skin looks good. It has had the time to regenerate overnight. It has had the time for different fluids to drain back into our body and get filtered by our lungs. It’s had its rest.

What Happens When You Don’t Get Enough Sleep

And with very little sleep, it shows. It shows in our thoughts. It shows in our actions, and it will show in your skin. And a lot of times you can even wake up with the bags underneath your eyes that show so much. Not getting enough sleep also affects your cortisol levels, and cortisol levels are controlled internally. And cortisol level or your stress hormone can interact with your skin, and also not make you look as young and vibrant and healthy.

Sleep is Essential!

Sleep’s essential for everything. We all know that. We all know we should be getting about eight hours of good sleep. We all know that the TV should not be on in the background while we sleep. In fact, it’s the number one cause of insomnia in America. So guys, just spend a few minutes a day planning your rest.

Plan for a Good Night Rest

And the best way to do that is to have a ritual before you go to bed of calming down. Not having caffeine for six hours before you go to bed. Not exercising for at least a couple of hours before you go to bed. Some sort of prayer or meditation right before you go to bed can really help set our brain up for success during sleep. Making sure that there are no unnecessary lights or noises when, whenever possible. Try to go to sleep at the same time every day, and try to wake up at the same time every morning, so that you can set your circadian rhythm.

I promise you if you do this after two or three weeks, people will start going up to you and saying, “Hey! What are you doing different? You look great!”
