Spider Veins

Video Transcript

So here’s another daily do from your local dermatologist!

Okay, so spider veins are little, small, little veins that tend to have legs to them. They kind of spread out in all sorts of different directions, and people tend to get them the wiser they are and they can form on areas that are dependent. Meaning lower legs because things go down, swelling goes down, blood vessels swell and you get more of these types of blood vessels that form. They’re not necessarily problematic from a medical perspective unless they are symptomatic and if they are symptomatic meaning, they’re painful, they’re itchy, they throb, those sorts of things, please do see your local dermatologist so that we can have a conversation and tell you what the treatment options are. Now if you just don’t like how they look then oftentimes we have treatment modalities that can help as well, as do vascular surgeons. So, please go to the appropriate specialist, either a dermatologist, plastic surgeon or vascular surgeon to talk about these spider veins. Now if you look below your knees and you start getting a lot of these excess blood vessel formation, or maybe you’re even getting the really big varicose veins, then please be seen by your primary care physician and perhaps by your cardiologist and perhaps by a vascular surgeon. We’ve got to make sure that the vascular status or the blood vessels and your entire body are healthy and then we can treat them if they’re symptomatic. So oftentimes this concept of spider veins, well, it’s kind of just a cosmetic thing and not much else is going on, but if other stuff is going on or if you have other signs or symptoms, that’s when we really need to have a conversation to figure out what’s right for you.
