Thought for the Day

To whom are you listening?

Have you ever had a song stuck in your mind that your just can’t stop “playing” over and over? That’s sometimes called an “earworm”. Earworms can be positive or negative. Some can be really irritating but not harmful. But what about the negative or evil “earworms” that come from those who are quick to point out your imperfections or remind you of your failures or tell you what CAN’T be done? These earworms just chip away at your self-image and self-confidence and, over time, can actually take over your true self.

But it turns out, those kind of earworms can only embed themselves in your psyche if you let them in. Sort of like vampires – they can’t come into your house unless you invite them in. And like vampires, these earworms can suck the life out of you little by little and so subtly that you don’t even realize it’s happening.

But here’s the good news. You can stop earworms by remembering that YOU have power over you. Not some person who is trying to make you feel bad, not some mean social media post, not someone preaching to you about something he/she really doesn’t know anything about, not by those who choose to judge you for how you look, what you wear, what you believe, etc. If a person is so inclined, it’s easy to find something to criticize about anyone or anything – but those people are really acting out their own insecurities or their own hurts, or displaying their own weakness. You, on the other hand, have the absolute power to block those earworms and all it takes is the desire to be your own person, live your own life, use the intellect and free will with which you were gifted at birth to reason things out for yourself and thus not be subject to someone else’s pathology.

After all, it’s your life and happiness on the line. So take care who you listen to – and stop the evil earworms before they infect you.
