And here are some more daily tips from your local dermatologist.
All right, so I’ve been asked a question of what is a birthmark? And a birthmark is simply a mark that’s on your skin when you were born. Now you can have lots of different birthmarks, and those can be different moles, or different blood vessel formations, or all sorts of other things can naturally occur on your skin. So when you are welcomed into this world, and smacked on the butt, anything that the doctor sees that is on your skin, that is an overgrowth of something that normally occurs there, that’s a birthmark.
Now if these are of cosmetic importance, you can talk to a plastic surgeon or dermatologist about what can possibly be done to remove those. But, if any of them start to grow or change throughout your life, you have to be seen by a dermatologist to make sure it hasn’t turned cancerous. Because each one of these birthmarks can become a cancer just like any other part of your body, and become a cancer.
And one last thing on birthmark: so you’re a brand new baby, and you come into the world, and you’ve got this little thing that’s about a centimeter big. That should grow proportionately with you as you grow. So if you grow 10%, it should grow 10%. But if you grow 10% and the birthmark is growing 200%, you really have to have that looked at.
And the last thing that I’m going to say about this birthmark topic is, sometimes they can actually go away too. So as you get older, your body can actually turn them back to normal skin. Any questions, talk to your provider.
