And here are some more daily tips from your local dermatologist.
All right, so what’s a stretch mark? Why do some people get stretch marks when they’re pregnant, and some people don’t? And why do some people get stretch marks when they’re growing as a child, but seem to go away a lot of the times, and sometimes stretch marks from gaining weight very quickly, don’t? Well it all has to do with your individual genetics, what time of life this is happening, what area of your body this is occurring on. But a stretch mark is basically when your skin is stretched very quickly and rapidly, and the collagen or the band of tissue that holds everything together and gives it its strength is damaged. The body tries to heal that damage the best it can, but sometimes it doesn’t do it very well, and the result is a stretch mark.
Now there’s all sorts of remedies on the internet about what’s going to prevent stretch marks, what’s going to take care of them, and I know a lot of my patients spend a ton of money on stuff that just doesn’t work. There are some cosmetic treatments that seem to help. So if you’re interested, please talk to a plastic surgeon or dermatologist about what is available that actually should have some benefits to you. But please don’t just go on the internet and purchase something from some crazy site promising you the sun and the moon, because chances are, all that’s going to happen is that money is going to miraculously come out of your bank account.
